The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) recently released the 2022 AIF Shared Vacation Ownership Owners Report, United States Study. The report showed the timeshare industry experienced a significant recovery from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Total timeshare sales volume increased by 64% from $4.9 billion in 2020 to $8.1 billion in 2021. What is very interesting is the change in the demographics of the average timeshare owner and timeshare buyer.

YOUNG AND DIVERSE DEMOGRAPHICS

A steady youth movement over recent years has seen the average age of timeshare owners decrease to 39 years-old. Millennials now represent 57% of timeshare owners and 65% of timeshare resale purchases. The younger generations see timeshare ownership as a perfect match to their travel needs. Timeshare products on the market today allow for more flexibility as to when or where owners can travel. Flexibility and exchange opportunities are rated as the top reasons for purchasing a timeshare. Timeshare owners are no longer of a single background; young families of all backgrounds are now the top buyers of timeshares.
